Dr. Maren Smithgall-Brown is originally from Pennsylvania where she graduated summa cum laude from Lehigh University with a Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Neuroscience. Afterwards she completed her Doctor of Optometry degree from the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Optometry. While attending SUNY, she enjoyed volunteering her time with the Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (SVOSH) program and at EZRA Medical Center performing vision therapy training. She also received several merit based awards for her strength in clinical skills.
During Dr. Smithgall’s optometric training, she completed ocular disease clinical externships at Woodhull Medical Center Hospital in Brooklyn as well as at Omni Eye Services in Parsippany. She also completed two rotations at the University Eye Center, serving the diverse population of Manhattan and focusing on primary care, vision therapy, pediatrics, and low vision services.
Before joining our team, Dr. Smithgall practiced optometry in both private practice and clinical settings throughout the state. Dr. Smithgall continues to be an active member in her field by staying involved with her local professional associations, including the Tri-County Optometric Society, New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians, and the American Optometric Association. She is married with two young sons. When she isn’t trying to keep up with her boys, she enjoys reading and spending time outdoors.
